Hackintosh: How to Remove Persistent Boot Flags

If you are encountering an issue where your system is continuing to boot, for example, in to safe mode even though the boot.plist file in the Extra's folder is free of -x and the Chimera boot window is free of additional boot flags, this is how you can fix it.

In OS X open Terminal

Then type:
sudo nvram -d boot-args

You'll have to type confirm by typing your password but that's all there is too it.  Hopefully you are no longer experiencing any random boot flags occurring when booting your Hackintosh.

Hackintosh: P-State Stepper Error 18 at step 2 on CPU X Possible Fix

I was doing a reinstall on a system that has been solid but I kept encountering the "P-State Stepper Error 18 at step 2 on CPU X" error.  The motherboard is older so I knew to use a patched DSDT.  Well, after a few hours trying to figure out what in the hell was going on I was able to finally fix the issue.  The problem was that I was using the wrong patched DSDT BIOS version for my motherboard.

Silly me.

Once I used the correct patched DSDT for my BIOS version I was able to get the build working.  So if you are encountering this error just double check that you are using the correct patched DSDT for your motherboard and for your BIOS version.

If you're positive that you are using the correct patched DSDT for your motherboard and BIOS version you might want to try this SSDT Generator over at TonyMac.  I don't have any knowledge of what it does, but apparently it has helped a few people.

Hackintosh: Hard Drive Not Showing Up in Disk Utility During Mavericks Install?

If you are wondering why your hard drive is not showing up in Disk Utilty when you are installing Mavericks then the most likely culprit is that you forgot to set your BIOS to ACHI mode.  This isn't a big deal anymore with the newer boards that are coming out since this option is usually preset to ACHI, but if you have an older board you might want to check to see that it is not set to IDE.

I encountered this problem today on another Hackintosh I am building with older parts.

Hackintosh: Kernel Panic/Freeze randomly Gigabyte Z87 motherboards

Dreaded Kernel Panic
So I recently purchased some new parts for a new Hackintosh build I wanted to do and was able to successfully get Mavericks up and running but would continuously encounter random freezes.  Sometimes I would get a kernel panic message similar to screenshot above or no message but the computer would lock up.

After digging around I found so many "solutions" but none of them worked for me.  I was basically using the same parts of an existing build, parts that have been used successfully w/o issues.  The new parts:
Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H
Intel i5 4670K
I read that disabling Vt-d might resolve the freezing problem but since I'm using a K processor disabling Vt-d is not an option.  I tried doing all of these other configs/options in the BIOS, using less than 4 sticks of RAM yet it would continue to freeze.  I was almost at the point where I was going to return the board, but finally stumbled across a suggestion that had finally worked (so far).

If you are encountering random freezes or kernel panics and you have one of the newer Z87X boards from Gigabyte, what you can try is to increase the voltage of the memory by +.1.  My memory's voltage was set at 1.5 so I increased it to 1.6.  So far I  haven't any problems and my Hackintosh has been solid.  You may even be able to increase it by less than +.1 but I have not tried any other voltage setting.  You can also bump it up to 1.65 to if you still have freezing issues.

Hopefully this helps those who are struggling with a Hackintosh that randomly freezes.

I have also read that boosting the System Voltage by +0.2 volts maybe help, but I would start with +0.1 volts first as that is where overclocked systems apparently run at. 

If you are still experiencing issues check out this thread over at TonyMac which might possibly have additional solutions.

Some people have had success with using less than 4 sticks of RAM, I did not, but that is just a temporary fix.  I don't know what Gigabyte is going to do so I would recommend waiting until the next release of motherboards.

Some people have also had success changing their System Definition to iMac 14,2.

Apparently there was a new bios beta release (F9a), which people have had success with.  Not sure if all of their boards have the newest beta BIOS but you can find the BIOS downloads at Tweak Town.  Obviously the BIOS is in the beta testing stage so try it at your own risk.

Hackintosh: Missing Bluetooth Controller Transport fix

This is another popular error that you may encounter when building a hackintosh.  I consider myself very comfortable with building hackintosh's, but with my latest build I was stuck on the Missing Bluetooth Controller Transport! error for the longest time.  

I had checked and rechecked all the possible solutions and none of them worked.  I was still able to successfully log in using -x but the graphics were very poor.  I made sure IGFX was the first option in BIOS (was also the only option I had since I didn't have a discrete card).  Since I have a K version processor, 4670K, I didn't have to worry about Disabling VT-d since it's not an available option in the BIOS settings.  I tried all types of boot flags, IGPEnabler=Yes IGPlatformID=0x260000 PCIRootUID=1 GraphicsEnabler=Yes, different 4600HD flags, but unfortunately none of those seemed to work.

What finally did work for me, even on OS X Mavericks, was to choose and install the DSDT Free option in the older version of Multibeast.  The only option I selected in Multibeast was the DSDT-Free option since the Gigabyte Z87 board doesn't require a DSDT.  So if none of the other previous solutions work for you, hopefully using the older Multibeast will resolve your issue.

What you can also try but a method I haven't tried myself is the following:

Boot with -s. When you see the prompt "root:":

Type: mount -uw /
Type: cd /System/Library/Extensions
Type: mkdir intel_back
Type: mv AppleIntelHD* AppleIntelF* intel_back/
Type: touch ../Extensions

Reboot and use -v flag.

Hackintosh: [IOBluetoothHCIController][start] -- completed fix

The dreaded [IOBluetoothHCIController][start] -- completed screen.
If you find yourself screen stuck at [IOBluetoothHCIController][start] -- completed line you most likely just got done installed OS X and booting into OS X for the first time.  If that is the case then the fix is quite easy.  Simply restart your computer and at the bootloader screen type -v -x.  This should allow you to get in to OS X to start the Multibeast installation.

If you have a CPU that does not end in a K, aka unlocked versions, then check your BIOS and look for something called Vt-d and Disable it.  This is known to cause issues with OS X while providing no benefit to OS X.

Another issue might be if you are using a VGA cable for your monitor.  It's known to not work unless you do some kext editing, so if possible use HDMI or DVI.

As always, I've found it best to use IGFX whenever possible.  Although, with the latest release of OS X Mavericks I was able to use my Sapphire 7950 without and problems.  I also no longer have to do the well known sleep trick or fbrotate trick.

The user Deepak Soni has also suggested removing appleintelhd3000.kext from System/Library/Extension folder and then reboot.

Hackintosh: Stuck at Apple logo fix


If you have just installed OS X for the first time and your Hackintosh is getting stuck at the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinner is spinning endlessly try using -v -x boot flags. 

You should normally boot with safe mode the first time around along with verbose mode to see the last line of code just in case it gets stuck.  Once you are in you can continue with the final steps including Multibeast.

It's always best practice to use integrated graphics, especially with the new CPU's, to minimize problems.

Hackintosh: Hide and Rename Partitions on the bootloader screen

If you have a hackintosh and dual boot you might notice that all of your Windows partitions will be displayed on your bootloader option screen.  Well there is an easy way to clean up the bootloader by hiding and renaming partitions.  It's quite easy to do:

1. Open Terminal on OS X
2. Type diskutil list

You should notice that all of the hard drives connected to your machine will now be displayed similar to the screenshot below.



Now open your org.chameleon.Boot.plist file located on your hard drive in the Extra folder and add a few more keys and strings.  An example of my parameters are below:

Rename:
<key>Rename Partition</key>
<string>hd(1,1) Win7</string>

Above I am renaming disk1s1 which is System Reserved to Win7.  If you wanted to rename multiple partitions you would separate them with a semi-colon.  For example:

<key>Rename Partition</key>
<string>hd(1,1) Win7; hd(2,1) Win8</string>

Hide:
<key>Hide Partition</key>
<string>hd(1,2) hd(2,1)</string>

I am also hiding 2 partitions, disk1s2 and disk2s1 which will no longer display on my bootloader screen.  So now when I boot my computer I'll only see the OS X option and Win7.

If you encounter issues hiding and renaming partitions:
If the above method isn't working for you or if you notice that the disks keep changing order  when you run diskutil list in Terminal what you can do is this:

Open your org.chameleon.Boot.plist file in TextEdit.

Remove any string parameters for the Hide Partition and Rename Partition keys.

Add the following at the end:

<key>GUI</key>
<string>No</string>

You should have something similar to this:
Save it.  Now the next time you boot you should see something like the photo below:

You can take a picture of the hdd list or write it down, whatever you prefer, and the next time you boot in to OS X you'll now be able to correctly hide and rename the partitions using the prefixes listed in the boot menu.

Remember to remove the added GUI key and string to display the graphical boot menu.

**I know previously I was able to rename and hide partitions based on their bootloader display name but it doesn't seem to work, for me at least.  I remember I was able to hide partitions simply by typing in the disk name (ie. "Windows C"), but that doesn't seem to work anymore.  Similarly I used to be able to rename partitions to include spaces (ie. "System Reserved" "Windows 7") but that too also doesn't seem to work.

Hackintosh: Stuck at [PCI Configuration Begin]

If you find your Hackintosh getting stuck at [PCI Configuration Begin] you should be able to fix this using the npci=0x3000 boot flag for Mountain Lion.  If you are running Lion you would use the npci=0x2000 boot flag.

Hackintosh: boot0 gibberish fix


I encountered this issue when creating my Hackintosh, boot0 gibberish that you see in the screenshot above.  This is how I fixed it:


Download and install Chameleon Wizard from here.

Update it to the latest version if prompted.

Click on the Install tab at the top.


Then based on your current setup choose the appropriate install method.  I have OS X on a standalone drive and Windows on it's own drive so my install method would be Boot0md.  They are pretty self explanatory.  Make sure the correct Target partition is selected and then click the install button.  Now once you restart you should no longer see the previous boot0 errors.
